Shaman Stories: Body And Spirit Are One And Yet Separate

A slender woman running along a wide road

As a teenager, I lived in a house just a few streets away from my school. One day, I forgot my homework at home. I knew that I had to turn it in to the teacher that same day, so I decided to take advantage of living so close to the school and run home during recess to get the homework. Despite the proximity, it was hard to do it in time, so I had to be quick.

As soon as the break began, I ran off as fast as I could. About halfway home, however, something strange happened.

It felt as if my spirit was breaking away from my body and hovering a bit above my still running body. I was aware that I was running, and my body was moving the same way as before, but it was as if it was doing so without my intervention. Just a mechanical sequence of movements as my consciousness floated unconnected over it and let it happen.

I think that was the moment when I really realized that spirit and body are not one, but exist separately from each other in a way, in a kind of symbiotic relationship. The spirit is the part of the self that lives on beyond the individual incarnation, constantly evolving and being reborn in different bodies. The body – the ego – is the part that we get from our biological parents in a particular incarnation and that offers our spirit various challenges and opportunities as long as it is incarnated in it.

If you learn to distinguish between the two, you can also work on your issues on different levels. The topics that you have brought with you from a previous incarnation, for example karma or trauma, must be addressed on a very deep spiritual level. Other topics, for example certain physical characteristics or social and material circumstances, can be opportunities offered to us by our current incarnation to develop ourselves spiritually. So these topics are more about our current physical existence.

Another advantage of being able to distinguish between ego and spirit is that it is easier to analyze the cause of physical symptoms. More often than you would think, the cause of an illness as well as physical or psychological problems lies on the spiritual or mental level. Of course, there are also symptoms that are triggered purely physically, for example hormone-based menopausal symptoms or many allergies. But many other diseases and ailments could be avoided or treated more easily if they were considered on a spiritual level. Simple examples of this are alcoholism, so-called messy syndrome or eating disorders. Deeper issues can be aversions to certain foods or situations, as well as recurring relationship problems.
