How to Assess a Couple’s Compatibility

Many people are curious if the person they are interested in, is actually matching with themselves.

Through the Four Pillars of Destiny (Saju), one can discern the fate in this lifetime that each partner has determined for themselves. To understand the relationship between two people, one first may look at the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar. This is because the Day Heavenly Stem symbolizes the ‘true self’. If the energies of these true selves resonate with one another, then—considering just the two of them—their compatibility is good.

Secondly, the compatibility between the parents and ancestors who gave birth to the couple must also be favorable to avoid any problems. Otherwise, their energies may clash, potentially leading to opposition from the family. In the Four Pillars of Destiny, ancestors are represented by the Year Pillar, and parents by the Month Pillar. Provided one can directly interpret the energies of the parents and ancestors, it is possible to easily and accurately grasp the significance of the respective Yin-Yang and Five Elements energies corresponding to the Year and Month Pillars, without the need for extensive knowledge.

When the roots, trunk and leaves are in harmony, all is well, and love blossoms. In the Four Pillars of Destiny, even this level of compatibility is considered favorable.

However, I have never once encountered anyone who can properly do the following: looking into the three lives (past, present and future). In Buddhism, this is called ‘The Three Knowledges’ (宿命通). By examining these three lives, one can determine whether two people are soulmates. If all three of the above conditions are met, one can look forward to a happy married life blessed by parents and siblings. However, even if the first and second conditions are not fully met, if they are soulmates, they already share a deep spiritual bond of trust; thus, they will not easily betray one another and will be able to overcome difficulties together.
